Career opportunities

The WA Ombudsman is a small organisation, employing approximately 30 staff in a range of occupations throughout its Executive, Assessments and Outreach, Investigations and Major Projects, Energy and Corporate Services teams.

Our staff have the opportunity to gain first hand understanding and experience of the role of an independent statutory office, reporting direct to the Parliament. We work closely with other independent accountability agencies to improve the integrity of the public sector.

Because of the breadth of our jurisdiction, staff can gain a unique overview of the operations of a wide range of State Government agencies, local governments and universities. They play an important part in helping agencies to improve their administrative practices and ensuring that the public get fair and reasonable responses to complaints.

What skills do you need

We aim to recruit people from a wide range of organisations and disciplines, ensuring that our staff have a diversity of skills and qualifications, and seek out staff who are able to work effectively with complainants and with agencies across Government.

We value strong communication and analytical skills and consider an understanding of what it means to act both impartially and independently to be an essential part of working in our Office.

We support continued approved study through the provision of negotiated study leave.

What we offer staff

We are committed to ensuring that all employees are provided with developmental opportunities on a fair and equitable basis. We encourage our employees to apply for further promotion as appropriate opportunities arise.

Our employees are covered by the Government Officers' Salaries, Allowances and Conditions Award 1989 and the Government Officers' Salaries, Allowances and Conditions Award Agreement 2006. Staff on secondment may be covered by the Public Service Award 1992 and the Public Service General Agreement 2006.

Graduate recruitment and university placements

The WA Ombudsman does not operate a graduate recruitment program but we encourage university graduates to apply for advertised vacancies. We welcome requests for university students to undertake specific projects and placements at our Office but are able to accept these only when our work allows us to provide the appropriate level of support and guidance.
